i am a renaissance social scientist and visual artist.

i make work that enlightens, empowers and evokes gradual change in my community, primarily where women, children and people of color are concerned.

i create art to avoid insanity.

culture | 3 | racism

i bridge the gap between fine art and documentary photojournalism. i capture perceptions in culture, physical and psychological insecurities and environments in urban areas. i paint on anything, with anything, using anything. i've been referred to as"the lady who writes on walls", but there's nothing lady like about what

i've painted on project buildings. i explore and command a variety of mediums which i use to create sculptures, functional pieces and gallery installations.

i coordinate and produce art and science resources for educational programs and organizations which allows me to teach cool stuff to kids who look like me. i also operate a non-profit arts organization that facilitates after school and summer camp programs. on the low, my sisters and i provide sanitary survival packs for women in shelters; and supplemental resources for women in transitional periods in life.

i want to explore, learn, help, create & share my experiences through art.

THE SOUTHERN GIRL

born in Jackson, MS and raised in South Miami – DADE County Florida, i grew up in a HUGE, traditional, southern family. feasting on endless spreads, telling stories, singing, dancing, laughing and capturing candid moments is our life! my parents were somewhat amateur photographers, my love for the arts was nurtured before age 7 when i became very angry with my dad for "taking bad pictures," & "not knowing where to stand". at the time, i lacked the vocabulary to articulate that the images were under or over exposed or that his shadow shouldn't be in every picture. he soon got the idea and purchased my first camera - the hot-pink Kodak 110 film camera #80swag.

as a PYT, my introduction to documentary photography began at Miami Palmetto Sr. HS. experimenting with film cameras, i learned how  to properly develop and print in the darkroom after ruining my sweet16 birthday dress with fixer. now, i prefer to ruin my dresses with paint. while exploring my love for paint, creating colors, i had the crazy idea of combining  mediums to create texture. this spawned my love for chemistry and led to an obsession  with adhesive mediums. i used mediums to create sick patterns with textures and text on papers and fabrics. teachers encouraged me to create a portfolio of these pieces and call it "mixed medium" art work. if only i'd listened and taken them seriously. most of those works where exhibited/sold at the annual Miami-Dade County Fair & Expo, destroyed in a hurricane or donated. a few pieces still remain in my family's private collection.
